why strength Train?

Strength Training with Purpose

Strength training is more than physical—it’s a pathway to resilience, discipline, and intentional living that equips you to pursue your higher purpose with conviction and endurance.

Strength training is one of the most powerful tools for transforming the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. Scientifically, it improves muscle and bone density, boosts metabolism, enhances cognitive function, and reduces the risk of chronic illness. But the benefits go deeper. It cultivates mental toughness, emotional resilience, and personal discipline—traits essential for living with purpose.

In a culture that prioritizes ease, convenience, and quick results, strength training calls us to something greater. It requires consistency, patience, and grit. It teaches us to lean into discomfort, to rise under pressure, and to keep showing up—especially when it’s hard. It’s not just about becoming fit—it’s about becoming faithful to the life you’re called to live.

You weren’t made to simply exist—you were made to move with intention, to act with courage, and to set a standard for conviction and hope in a world that’s forgotten what both look like.

Bennie’s Story

It’s Never Too Late to Move, Grow, and Inspire.

Bennie and I first crossed paths at a gym in Baltimore where I was lifting. He noticed me working through snatches and cleans and, with a spark in his eye, told me he wanted to learn how to do that—specifically, the elusive overhead squat.

At the time, Bennie was 67 and not new to the gym. A personal trainer and former bodybuilder, he had spent decades building muscle and discipline. But years of training in one style had left him with limited mobility in his shoulders and hips. Still, he was ready for a new challenge.

After talking with another trainer, Bennie learned that to truly master the Olympic lifts, he needed to find a USA Weightlifting certified coach. I happened to be just that, with years of CrossFit coaching experience as well. We decided to start this journey together in the spring of 2024.

Our first focus: the snatch and the overhead squat. For many, the overhead squat is humbling. For Bennie, it was a mountain. We began with seated overhead squats on a 24” box to help him feel the movement safely. As he grew more comfortable, we gradually lowered the height—moving from plates to a bench—until eventually, there was nothing left beneath him. One day, about two months in, Bennie stood up with the bar locked out overhead—no assistance, no support, just a deep, stable overhead squat. He was ecstatic. So was I.

From there, we layered in the snatching movement using a complex progression: a snatch grip deadlift, to a hip power snatch, into an overhead squat. Week after week, Bennie showed up ready to refine the details—working on the hip drive, the bar path, and building confidence under the bar. We spent close to a year focusing on form, prioritizing control and mobility before chasing numbers.

Today, Bennie moves with fluidity and purpose. He can catch a power snatch and ride it down into the bottom of an overhead squat with stability and control, something he once thought would be impossible. As of now, Bennie can hit a 90lb power snatch with an overhead squat, maintaining excellent form at 69 years old. His next goal? A 135lb snatch—and we’re well on our way.

In the three months prior to this writing, Bennie has also put on five pounds of muscle, further proof that consistent, intentional training can build strength and capacity at any age.

What’s even more inspiring is that Bennie has taken the overhead squat progression we worked through together and is now using it to help his own older clients improve their strength and mobility. The progress he’s made is equipping him to help others move better and grow stronger, too.

Bennie’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to learn something new, challenge yourself, and build strength that goes beyond the mirror. If you’re ready to move with intention, lift with confidence, and discover what your body is capable of—no matter your age—I’d love to help you start your story today.

What Bennie says:

I have been training with Steve for 18 months and I can say he is one of the most knowledgeable and attentive coaches I have worked with.

As a personal trainer myself, I sought Steve’s expertise to learn Olympic lefts – including the snatch, clean, push jerk, and split jerk, as well as, kettlebell work. He not only broke each movement down with precision but always emphasized proper form and safety, which gave me the confidence to progress without risk of injury.

Since working with Steve. I have gained five pounds of lean muscle and significantly improved my technique. Even better I have been able to pass on what I have learned to my clients.

I highly recommend Steve to anyone looking to elevate their training, whether you are a beginner or a fitness professional looking to expand your skill set.

Megan’s Story

From Constant Pain To Crushing PRs

Megan and I first met about ten years ago at CrossFit, but it wasn’t until recently that she reached back out—through my wife—to see if I was still coaching. She was stuck. Her workouts were leaving her wrecked for two weeks at a time, and she was dealing with a laundry list of health challenges: PCOS, Hashimoto’s, IBS, constant bloating, fatigue, poor sleep, joint pain, and stubborn weight gain despite training and nutrition efforts. She felt like her body was working against her at every turn.

We started with the basics. I encouraged her to speak with her doctor about adding creatine to support her recovery, and it made a huge difference—cutting her recovery time from two weeks to a single day.

But we didn’t stop there. Megan’s journey required a thoughtful, holistic approach, balancing her training with a sustainable nutrition strategy to address her stomach issues and energy crashes. We landed on a primarily carnivore-based plan with a small inclusion of carbs, helping her lift heavy, drop weight, and keep her stomach happier.

Since we started working together, Megan has dropped inches, lost weight, and gained lean muscle. Her posture has improved, and the pain tied to it is gone. She’s sleeping better, has more energy throughout the day, and has found the mental clarity that once felt out of reach.

We dialed in her training with a powerlifting program supplemented with kettlebell work, gradually adjusting her schedule to keep her progressing without burning out. And the results speak for themselves:

  • She set a goal to deadlift 225 lbs and crushed it with a 240 lb pull.
  • She aimed for a 135 lb bench and surpassed it with a strong 140 lb press.
  • Other women in the gym now stop to comment on the impressive weights she moves during her workouts.

Megan is a beast, plain and simple. Her consistency, trust in the process, and willingness to adjust her lifestyle have allowed her to step out of a cycle of constant pain and fatigue and into a season of strength, clarity, and progress.

If you’ve been pushing hard but feel like your body is working against you, you don’t have to stay stuck. Megan’s story is proof that with the right plan, the right coaching, and a commitment to the process, real change is possible.

You can build strength, gain energy, and step into a life where you feel capable and clear— not held back by constant setbacks.

Ready to take the next step? Let’s connect and build a plan that helps you move forward with strength and purpose.

What Megan says:

Steve is an exceptional trainer and mentor! He is knowledgeable, genuine, and welcoming. From our initial meeting, he addressed my concerns and goals, reassuring me that my challenges were manageable. His honesty and commitment gave me confidence that we could make progress together.

I have been dealing with difficult stomach and autoimmune issues, as well as muscle and joint pain. Steve’s gradual approach helped me ease back into training after a long break. He continually expands his knowledge of the body, training, and nutrition, and generously shares this information with his clients. He is always open to questions and will research anything he is uncertain of.

Steve is consistently encouraging, pushing me to reach my potential. My training sessions are my absolute favorite part of my week, leaving me feeling better both physically and mentally. Since working with Steve, I have gained muscle, improved my posture, and experienced a reduction in pain. My stomach and autoimmune issues have also improved, and my mental clarity has increased. Stepping up to the bar and training with Steve has truly been the therapy that I needed.

Yelena’s Story

A Mother of Five Who Found Her Strength

I met Yelena through her son, a young man I was mentoring in powerlifting, Olympic lifting, and life. One day, he told me, “My mom wants to train with you.” She had just given birth to her fifth son and was ready for change.

When I went to meet her, I didn’t even get a chance to ask why she wanted to train. She looked me straight in the eye and said,

“My doctor said I’m fat and need to lose weight. I want to work out three days a week for 45 minutes.”

So, we started. It was August 2024.

That first session was rough. Physically, it was a shock to her system. Emotionally, it stirred things she had been carrying for a long time. She struggled, and honestly, I didn’t know if she would come back.

But she did. Sore and a little nervous, she came back.

She shared with me that our first workout left her feeling emotional and overwhelmed. I let her know something I often tell my clients: when you push beyond what you believe you can handle, it can release years of built-up stress and emotion. It’s not something to be ashamed of— it’s part of the process. This is your time, and my gym is a judgment-free space. If you need to cry, scream, or let out a few choice words to keep going, that’s okay. It means you’re moving forward.

After that conversation, Yelena locked in.

She showed up. She did the work. She never complained.

She became a beast in the gym.

About five months in, I asked her how she was feeling. She smiled and told me she felt great—and that her clothes were fitting much better.

Now, Yelena is moving with purpose and discipline. She’s getting stronger every week, lifting weights she never thought she could, and moving well in every session. As a mother of five boys, from a toddler to grown men, she is ready for the daily grind with renewed strength and confidence.

She didn’t just lose weight. She reclaimed her energy, her movement, and her mindset.

Yelena showed up even when it felt tough, and in the process, she discovered a strength that now fuels her daily life as a mother of five. She moves with purpose, energy, and confidence—and you can too. If you’re ready to reclaim your strength, build lasting energy, and step fully into the life you’re meant to live, I’m here to guide you. You don’t have to do it alone. Let’s find your strength together.

What Yelena says:

I’ve been training with Coach Steve for a year now, and he’s been amazing.

After pregnancy, I lost weight, built muscle, and feel stronger than ever. His workouts are smart, supportive, and tailored specifically for postpartum recovery. My mood and energy have improved so much, too.

I highly recommend him if you’re looking to get back in shape after pregnancy and start a healthier, stronger journey!

Christine’s Story

Training For Life’s Big Adventure

When Christine first reached out, she had a clear goal: prepare for a multi-day backpacking trip to conquer Half Dome in Yosemite. She was already in decent shape, with a strong lower body, but was understandably concerned about how her shoulders and back would handle carrying a 35-pound pack up and down rugged terrain.

We started with a month of careful movement assessment, dialing in small adjustments to her gait and hip mechanics with resistance band work. Christine moved well, and these refinements laid a strong foundation for what was ahead. We also focused on building small muscle stability in her shoulders—front and lateral raises, rotator cuff work, and internal and external rotations—to prepare her for the demands of long days under load.

Next, we worked on knee stability using single-leg extensions, TRX single-leg squats, and Bulgarian split squats, ensuring her joints would stay strong, especially during steep descents.

As Christine gained confidence, we transitioned to powerlifting and kettlebell training to enhance her strength, mobility, and cardiovascular endurance. She moved beautifully through deadlifts, back squats, and bench presses, demonstrating excellent body control.

Kettlebells were new to Christine, so we spent time building up her core strength and mastering technique. Swings, cleans, presses, snatches, Turkish get-ups, single and double kettlebell movements—Christine learned it all, showing up with commitment and a smile every session.

To specifically prepare for the uphill climbs, we integrated kettlebell front rack step-ups, a demanding exercise that builds core and upper back strength so the trunk doesn’t collapse forward under heavy load. It was brutal but exactly what she needed. We also used kettlebell clean and presses and snatches to build shoulder endurance for long days with her pack.

Halfway through her training, Christine went on a practice hike. She felt great overall but noticed some knee soreness and instability on the downhill descent. We quickly adjusted, modifying her step-ups to include stepping down and forward rather than simply reversing the movement. This small but targeted change fixed the issue.

Then came the big trip. Christine set out for Yosemite and had an experience she will never forget. She climbed Half Dome carrying her pack with confidence, her body strong and prepared for the challenge. The training we built together ensured she didn’t just complete her goal—she was able to fully embrace the adventure.

Christine came to me with a dream of hiking Half Dome, and together we built the strength and confidence she needed to carry a heavy pack and embrace every step of that adventure. Just like Christine, you don’t have to train alone for the goals that matter most to you. Whether you’re preparing for a mountain, a milestone, or simply want to feel stronger in your everyday life, we can create a plan that equips you to move with purpose and live fully in the moments you don’t want to miss. Let’s get you ready for your next adventure.

What Christine says:

I decided to sign up for personal training with Steve Eastwood after booking a big adventure backpacking trip climbing Half Dome in Yosemite, and I’m so glad I did!

Steve was simply the best – he was so invested in my backpacking goal, creating custom workouts to target the muscles I needed to strengthen to be successful on the trail, and challenged and motivated me weekly to continually improve. Steve was patient as I learned new exercises and machines I’d been too nervous to try on my own.

After a practice backpacking trip a few months into training, he took the time to check in and adjust our workouts based on my feedback. I felt like I had a true accountability partner, coach, and support system rolled into one.

With his guidance, I was able to successfully backpack, climb steel cables up a rock face, and experience an amazing adventure I’ll cherish!

Phil’s Story

Destroying Plateaus and Building Strength That Lasts

Phil isn’t just a client— he’s a friend. Before he became my first client at Eastwood Strength, we bonded over our shared interests that included, but were not limited to, training hard, challenging ourselves, and living with purpose.

A former high school and college track and football athlete, Phil was no stranger to hard work. But by the time he came to me, he felt stuck. His squat had plateaued at 225 pounds, and he avoided deadlifts because he didn’t feel confident in his form. Other coaches had helped him with the basics, but he knew he needed more than generic cues to break through his plateau.

We made small but powerful adjustments—angling his toes out 15 degrees, elevating his heels on plates to improve depth, and focusing on form and tempo to engage his glutes, quads, and hamstrings more effectively. We didn’t rush heavy numbers. We built a foundation of quality movement and confidence under the bar.

In just 12 weeks, Phil saw the difference:

  • 365 lb back squat
  • 155 lb shoulder press
  • 355 lb deadlift
  • 335 lb bench press

Phil has been training with me consistently for over two and a half years, following a hybrid strength and power program four days a week. His honest feedback has helped shape how I coach, including refining rest day scheduling to align with his recovery and lifestyle. He’s dealt with the occasional shoulder tweaks that come with heavy lifting, but he’s learned how to train smart, listen to his body, and keep moving forward.

Today, at 35, Phil’s strength speaks for itself:

  • Back squat: 535 lbs
  • Bench press: 345 lbs
  • Deadlift: 500 lbs
  • Shoulder press: 185 lbs

Phil’s story is a reminder: strength isn’t just about the numbers you put up. It’s about showing up consistently, dialing in the details, and building confidence in your training. It’s about working with a plan that fits your life while calling you to grow.

Phil’s story is proof that you don’t have to stay stuck. With the right plan and the right coaching, you can break through plateaus, learn to move with confidence, and build the kind of strength that shows up in every part of your life.

What Phil says:

Steve has been a great trainer and mentor throughout the 12-week training process. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience. He checks in at least once a week to see how you’re doing. Makes sure that there is a plan of attack before starting the training. Has been flexible with the workout schedule whenever there was a scheduling issue. Great at fixing and critiquing lifts to make sure you’re doing them correctly. Gives great recommendations on how to progress with an exercise. Tries to push you to do your best and beyond what you think you can achieve.

All in all, I would definitely recommend Steve to anyone who is looking to either start their workout journey or would like to add to their workout experience in a positive way!
